“Loving God”
Luke 10:25-37


I. Loving God – In Quality and Quantity

A. “With All” – The Common Denominator – “a Hebrew term that denotes a comprehensive involvement”

B. Your Heart – For the Jewish/Hebrew listener the heart was the “core” of one’s personal being (Proverbs 4:23) that directed the will, fueled the emotions, and energized the body.

C. Your Soul – Our closest words would be “emotion/passion” (Matthew 26:38) a term that denotes emotional passion and energy

D. With All Your Mind – A general term that carried the idea of intellectual, willful vigor and determination; both the meaning of mental endeavor and of physical exertion and strength.


Genuine Love of the Lord is intelligent, feeling, willing, and serving. It involves thought, sensitivity, intent, and action. God has always rebuked empty words and empty rituals. His desire is always wholehearted relationships.

II. Loving God – “A Prescription for Growth”

A. Grounded/Rooted in the New Birth – John 14:23-24; I John 2:5, 3:17, 4:12-13, 16-21

B. Grows Through Reflection on Redemption – Luke 7:36-50; I Corinthians 15:9-10; Romans 11:32 – 12:1

I. Attitudes That “Stoke” the Fires of Creativity

A. Rejoice – “chairo” – a term of salutation, of goodwill, delight, gladness, (root word “charis” or grace), to rejoice
B. Pray “without ceasing”, continual – “adialeiptos” – without omission
C. Give thanks in everything, for all things (Ephesians 5:19-20), as you do all things (Colossians 3:17)

In Summary – Gladly embrace all the brethren and all circumstances with a joyful, praying heart knowing that all things are a great opportunity for the creative work of the Holy Spirit in and through the body of Christ.

II. Attitudes That “Stymie” the Fires of Creativity

A. Quench – “sbennumi” - to put out, to choke, strangle, used to describe the putting out of a fire.
B. Grieve – “lupeó – to cause sorrow and/or emotional pain.

The Critical – Finding fault with the Holy Spirit and those He uses.

C. Despise – to belittle, mock, to take lightly

The Cynic – because of past disappointments they doubt and therefore discourage.

III. Anticipating the Creative Voice of God – The Holy Spirit
A. His “History”
B. His Present Ministry – The Body of Christ
C. The Prophetic Ministry – Its Priority
D. The “Proving” – dokimazo – to test, prove, with the expectation of approving, i.e.… not critical but discerning

3. Prophecy (Speak, encourage, exhort, comfort)

V. Attitudes That “Sharpen” the Fires of Creativity

A. “Prove all things” – to test, try, etc… Discernment – “If it is of God it will stand the test of” -
1. Light – Purifies
2. Heat – Tempers

B. Abstain/Stay away from evil – Discipline

“Your life is the platform from which you preach, the soil from which fruit grows; there is no such thing as a ministry abstract from a life.”
